We still live in a world where 15,000 children under the age of five die every day from illnesses that could have been prevented, such as pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria. And almost half the deaths are attributable to malnutrition.

However, there is also good news: 30 years ago, 1 in 11 children worldwide died before their fifth birthday. Today that figure has fallen to 1 in 26. The work of UNICEF makes a difference – and events like CYCLING FOR CHILDREN help improve the situation for children around the world.

For instance, in 2017, UNICEF and its partners managed to:

•    Supply 33 million people in humanitarian crisis regions with safe water, including 5.9 million in Syria alone
•    Successfully treat 4 million children with severe acute malnutrition
•    Vaccinate 141 million children in Africa against polio
•    Provide medical care to 15.2 million people in humanitarian emergencies

UNICEF has over 70 years’ experience in working with developing countries and providing emergency aid. In more than 150 countries, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund works to ensure that children have enough to eat and a safe water supply, are vaccinated against diseases and receive medical treatment. Whether in the famine region of South Sudan or in the brutal civil war zones in Yemen and Syria, UNICEF is untiring in its efforts to save lives.
